When attempting to open a Microsoft Word document the following error message titled "Microsoft Visual Basic" would appear:
An error occurred while loading 'ThisDocument'. Do you want to continue loading this project?
If you respond with a Yes, Microsoft Word hangs and if you click No, you get a Read Only version of you file.
We noticed that this problem only occurred with clients who had Adobe Acrobat 5.0 loaded on their machines running Windows 95 and Windows 98. When we uninstalled Adobe Acrobat 5.0 the problem went away. We even thought that our documents were corrupted but we were able to open them again.
We have also heard from people who are running Windows XP and Windows 2000 and have exactly the same problem.
We finally determined that the problem has to do with the Adobe Toolbar that appears in Microsoft Word. Eliminate this integration, and the problem goes away. Obviously, if you use the toolbar and all of it's features you are a little stuck; we use File, Print and select Adobe PDFWriter in these instances where the Toolbar has been removed.
Before removing the toolbar, try the following patch from Adobe - we didn't have much luck with this though - Adobe version 5.0.5 [download from Adobe]
The following *should* resolve the 'ThisDocument' problem but we cannot take any responsibility if you mess up your computer - ok? These steps remove the PDFMaker toolbar from your computer.
