If Microsoft Outlook us running slow, or you are unable to sent or receive e-mail messages, or you get error messages about local cache being different than the server, then the following steps can be performed to rebuild the local cache. The cache being a local copy of your e-mail messages
- From within Microsoft Outlook, turn Cache Mode off.
- Click Tools
- E-mail accounts
- Select "View or Change" existing e-mail accounts
- Click Next
- With "Microsoft Exchange Server" selected, click "Change"
- Uncheck "Use Cached Exchange Mode"
- "Next"
- "OK"
- "Finish"
- Close Microsoft Outlook
- Delete local OST files from local hard drive
- Click Start
- Search
- For Files and/or folders
- Expand the "More Advanced Options"
- Check "Search hidden files and folders"
- In the "All or Part of the File Name", enter "*.ost" (without quotes)
- Select "Local Hard Drives"
- Click Search
- Once the computer has searched for all the OST files, highlight the files found and delete them. A copy is on the server.
- Turn Cache mode back on
- Run Microsoft Outlook
- Click Tools
- E-Mail accounts
- Select "View or change existing e-mail accounts"
- Next
- With "Microsoft Exchange Server" selected, click Next.
- Check "Use Cached Exchange Mode"
- Next
- OK
- Finish
- Close Microsoft Outlook
- Restart Microsoft Outlook
At this stage the cache will be rebuild by downloading all of your e-mails from the Microsoft Exchange server. This can take a while ....
